Humorous, sarcastic and in your face opinion about politics and american culture
When I was a teenager I tried to say the n-word in the playful context I heard the other teens in my community say it. I tried once, maybe twice, but then I gave up. It made absolutely no sense to me.Now that I’ve grown up, I can look back and understand why I couldn’t make that word fit into my vernacular. I was in a different class than the class those kids were living in. It was not that my family had more money than theirs. In the black community the class structure is about mindset. There are those black people, who no matter how much money they make, or how successful they are, their mentality will always reflect “poor.” And that mindset of poor is angry, hostile, and perpetually disappointed with their lot. Even if we lived right next door to each other, Whoopi and I would NEVER be friends. Because she has chosen to be poor despite her wealth. Her idea of never forgetting where she comes from is to revert to crass and sarcastic behavior. Shephard too. The reality is that people like Whoopie, Shephard, and Jessie Jackson are living their lives with facades. They think they are fooling everybody. But with a black man in the largest spotlight in America’s history, the truth is coming out. And everyone can see for themselves, the emperor isn’t wearing any clothes. The jig is up!So Whoopi, in a display of huge oblivious ignorance, has shown the world her true colors. nice post nik.
this comment is a copy of the comment i left on geeeez blog since she did a previous post about this.~m
OK, no way I can add much to Maria's comments. She said it all beautifully, as usual. But I can say that, of all the slang words that refer to races or nationalities, the N word is the one that offends me the most. I don't know why. My family grew up in Italian ghettos in Chicago and were called many names. I grew up in the West where discrimination was around, but not overt. When I would hear a family member use the N word (which, thankfully, was rare) I would blow up. My dad and I fought once during his last year of life because he called the Korean man next to him (who didn't speak English) a "damn Chinaman". I hit the roof and asked him how he would feel is that man called him a "damn wop." He looked startled that anyone would dare do such a thing! I simply hate all those deragatory words. But my theory is that some people feel so low on the totem pole in life that their only way to feel like someone big is to make others smaller than them. And hurtful slang can do that. Whew, you hit on one of my real "buttons."
well put maria
No one should use the word, and especially not blacks who are most offended by it. I know some think that it means something different if it comes from a black person, but I only see hypocrisy. If you don't want people to do something, you have to practice what you preach. These women are freakin' stupid. Not that I did before, but I have no respect for Whoopi or the fat lady, whoever she is.Whoa, that lady started crying! Wtf? Is this what suburban house wives are watching these days? And people are concerned about sex on tv? This seems way worse...
I'd vote No people YES
You know, Nikki ... if Whoopi advocates or justifies the use of that word among black people, then Whoopi is an idiot. You must have noticed we have no shortages of idiots in our country; a fact that presents us with an ideal trade situation. We can sell or trade our abundance of idiots for some other commodity that we really need ... like, patriots.Yes, I will be happy to accept a Nobel Prize for this suggestion!
I appreciate all the thoughtful responses here on this topic...I think most people agree that Whoopi is out of line and flat out wrong in what she and Shepard are advocating and I say that as a white person. They probably think have no right to an opinion on the matter but I am with Maria, DB, Sandi, Z and Mustang, its hyopocritical. Race relations in this country will never get passed such ignorance unless we can all agree that degrading people is wrong no matter what color you are. Great comments everyone...especially Maria who says it like it is and with OOMPH! And of course mustang should get a nobel prize. FYI DB this suburban house wife doesn't watch such a ridiculous show, I only read about it in CNN..thanks everyone. Keep the topic going its an important one...:)N
dont be silly ..Blacks are allowed to be racist..remember?..great post !:)
elizabeth is an idiot. she is so transparent it stinks. black people can call other blacks the "n" word and not be offended. hispanics can call other hispanics "beaners" and not be offended. italians can call other italians "wop" and think nothing of it. it's the "i can call my kid whatever i want, but DONT U DARE call my kid anything" rule.watching elizabeth and her phoniness is disgusting.
You think Elizabeth is phony? She is saying real stuff in a group of women that are totally believe and act differently. I am amazed at her courage to stand up to these women and challenge what they say. You hav e my 100% support elizabeth. Whoppi, you are wrong and no one should use that word. The problem is that us "white guys" can't say jack about any race because we always get blamed. Great post.
